Juliana Tamayo, HEAR Scholar of 2019, had the opportunity to go on an Alternative Break Immersion Program to El Paso/Ciudad Juarez with 10 other girls from her school.

Juliana is a sophomore at Loyola University Chicago. She is currently double majoring in International Studies and Spanish with a minor in Women Studies and Gender Studies. Here’s what she had to say about her trip…….

“It was a transformative experience that fit well with my majors. During the trip we traveled back and forth between El Paso and Ciudad Juarez. We met with community leaders on both sides of the border and volunteered at one of the many shelters in El Pao. It’s one thing to hear about politics in the news but to actually see and hear the stories of migrants looking for a better life in the United States is completely different”.
